What to Do When RV Collision Repair Parts Are Obsolete

magine what goes through the mind of RV owners after a collision when they learn that outer body panels or parts for the family motorhome are obsolete. I have seen this many times and it is always shock and dismay they express. The RV may have cost a hundred thousand dollars or more. Often it is only ten years or slightly older, with less than 35.000 miles of use. Often virtually new in appearance. If parts are obsolete is it a total loss? RV’s, specifically motor homes and travel trailers, are prone to obsolescence of body replacement parts much earlier than the general public RV owner expects.

RV collision repair parts are often on back order. Many manufactures will not start a production run until there is a call for several orders of the same part.

The explanation is financial I have been told. It does not make sense financially to tool up and start a production run for one part. If a part is out of stock and not obsolete, it may take several months for the next production run.

RV dealers typically do not stock large body panels; they are ordered directly from the manufacturer. The front nose cap for example, is often in the two thousand dollar range and the freight on such a large part is often three to five hundred dollars. Often special ordered parts are not returnable and non-refundable.

To be clear, I am talking about vehicle body parts, not refrigerators, stoves or furniture.

Body parts include front and rear caps, bumpers, glass, entry doors, cargo doors, roofs and siding. In other words, the most common collision damaged parts.

We have fabricated side panels as in this example. Entry and cargo doors, bumpers, even modified the front panel for head lights designed for another vehicle when the original headlights were obsolete. The RV pictured has aluminum siding. We have also made molds to fabricate obsolete fiberglass body panels.
