Shasta/Almanor: Spring fishing very good

By Jeff Goodwin
03/14/15 -- Anglers have a lot of options right now in the Shasta region. The bass fishing remains very good and the trout fishing on the lakes is heating up as well. Mark Schmitke of Humboldt recently made a trip to Lake Almanor and found excellent jumbo brown trout to be on the bite in the shallows.

Mark was throwing shallow diving plugs and hooked over 20 big browns to 6 lbs. over a two day period. Shasta Lake bass fishing continues to be very good in the shallows using crank baits early and the rubber baits are turning on as the sun comes up overhead.

Jason Vallotton, Lake Shasta Crappie
Jason Vallotton was fishing for bass recently when he hooked a fish of a lifetime, for its species, a 16" Crappie on a swim bait at Lake Shasta! Jason related that a fish that good just had to go back in!

Chris Schertz of C&A Guide Service recently fished the Trinity Lake, and had an excellent day catching lots of big bass. Anthony Cox of AC Guide Service Is reporting an improved bite on rainbow trout at Keswick reservoir trolling Yakima Bait Co. F4 Flatfish in a variety of colors.

I will be running guided rainbow trout trips on the Sacramento river again this May and expect this catch and release fishing to be red hot again this year! If you are interested in experiencing this fishery from a 24' Willie jet boat using ultra light spin gear, give me a call. Its my favorite fishery and many of my clients drive great distances to take advantage of the world class trout fishing we have right here in the town of Redding, Ca. If you are interested in fishing a rainbow trout/kokanee combo trip with Capt. Anthony Cox and I, call now and book your day! We will be fishing the river in the morning in my boat for trout and then switching to fast action kokanee fishing on Whiskytown with AC Guide Service at around 10:30. These trips are becoming very popular and are a great way to spend a day with family or friends.

Tight lines to all you anglers out there! This year is going to be another one to remember for sure!
