158 trophy racks displayed in Medford

02/05/15 -- An amazing 158 trophy buck and bull racks were on display on Saturday, January 31 at the Sportsman’s Warehouse in Medford for the conclusion of the 2015 Bucks and Bulls contest. Action started at 9 a.m. and continued until 5:30 p.m. when the last of the horns and racks were picked up by the hunters and prizes were awarded.

In between, youngsters got to play many games including ring toss, shuffleboard, steelhead casting, bow shoot and bean bag toss. Music was provided by the country band “Fogline.” Nearly 570 people entered the facility to shop, examine all the horns and take part in the awards ceremony.

“We had a total of 158 people enter the contest (a few turned in both elk and deer) and of these there were 22 youth entries (17 and under) and 30 of them were taken by women,” according to Megan Jefferies, Sportsman’s Warehouse Office Manager.

Brian Sorensen of Grants Pass took first place in the Rocky Mountain Elk Archery category with a bull that scored 377 1/8.

Jared Bucher of Jacksonville captured first place in Rocky Mountain Elk Rifle category. His bull scored 328.

Cody Hackett of Riddle took first place for Roosevelt Elk in the archery division with a bull that scored 343 7/8.

Top spot for Roosevelt Elk Rifle went to Van Bond of Rogue River. Van’s bull scored 321 5/8.

In the Mule Deer category, Carlton Justus of Springfield got first place with a set of horns that scored 198 7/8.

Top honors for Blacktail Rifle went to Gene Crawford of Central Point. His buck scored 168 4/8.

For Blacktail Youth, the winner was Emily Kimmel of Eagle Point. Her buck measured 146 5/8.

Bryce Rose captured first in the Blacktail Archery category with a buck that scored 158 7/8

Jessica Montague took first place in the Women’s Division. Her horns were judged to be 86% to the Oregon State record.
