New turkey hunting book now available

By John Higley
06/01/14 -- One thing leads to another they say -- and it’s true. Early last year fellow outdoor writer JJ Reich, from Minnesota, had a brilliant idea. We both write columns for Turkey Country Magazine, the in-house publication of the National Wild Turkey Federation, and Reich thought we should combine them in a book.

Reich met with Jay Cassell editorial director of New York based Skyhorse Publishing, at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas in January, 2012. And Cassell, who edited my stuff in 1974 when he worked for Outdoor Life, expressed interest in the idea. Eventually it came to pass that I would write the book and Reich would add sidebars as needed.

It was quite a project, really, and we’re proud of the end result. The book, published in hard cover form, has 277 pages and 170 full color photographs. It covers nearly every aspect of turkey hunting as I’ve known it for more than 40 years. Successful Turkey Hunting has been distributed to book stores, and other outlets nationwide. The cover cost is $24.95. Currently, I have some available for mail order sales.

John Higley's byline has appeared in outdoor magazines hundreds of times. He’s written for Outdoor Life many times and was their California editor for a number of years. Higley's columns appear regularly at MyOutdoorBuddy.com. He has written four books: "The Guide to Hunting Deer in California for the CDFG/DFW"; "Hunting Wild Turkeys in The West" and "Hunting Blacktail Deer." His latest book, "Successful Turkey Hunting" was published in May, 2014 by Skyhorse Publishing in New York, and is being sold nationwide. A prolific writer, his columns also appear in the National Wild Turkey Federation’s "Turkey Country" Magazine, the CDFW’s "Outdoor California" Magazine and "California Game and Fish." Since 1966, he has been an active member of the Outdoor Writer’s Association of America and he also belongs to the Outdoor Writer’s Association of California.
